Information
- Elevation
- 652 m
- Country
- Kepulauan Cook (CK)
- Location / Range
- Pegunungan tengah Rarotonga (tanpa nama barisan resmi), Kepulauan Cook
- Mountain type
Description
Te Manga is the highest point on Rarotonga and in the entire Cook Islands at 652 m; as an island high point its topographic prominence equals its full elevation. Rarotonga itself is the deeply eroded remnant of an extinct volcano, so all of its interior peaks are volcanic rock. For most walkers, “climbing a mountain” on Rarotonga means the famous Cross-Island Track: up from the Avatiu/Avarua valley in the north to Te Rua Manga (“The Needle”, about 413 m) — a breccia rock spire, essentially an old volcanic plug left standing as the softer rock around it eroded — then down the southern side to the Wigmore/Papua waterfall. The true Te Manga summit is a far tougher, separate outing: a muddy, root-tangled scramble through dense rainforest with steep, rope-assisted pitches, best done with a local guide rather than as a casual walk.

Routes
Cross-Island Track (traverse utara → selatan via The Needle / Te Rua Manga)
Sedang–berat (bagian curam bertali/berantai, akar licin; searah membelah pulau)Rarotonga's most famous cross-island walk, cutting from the north side (near Avarua) to the south over roughly 6 km in 3–4 hours. Marked with red triangles, the track climbs through forest to the iconic rock pillar The Needle (Te Rua Manga), passes steep rope- and chain-assisted sections, then descends a valley to finish near swimmable Wigmore's Waterfall. Many walk it with a local guide.

Sedang (tanjakan hutan curam ke dasar pilar; opsi bagian bertali)A shorter alternative for those not wanting the full crossing: climb from the northern trailhead to the base of The Needle rock pillar, enjoy the ridge and coastal views, then return the same way. A good half-day option, though it still demands care on slippery roots and soil and the rope section near the pillar.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on Te Manga fall into two themes. First, climbing Te Manga's true summit — Rarotonga's highest point — which is almost always described as very demanding despite its modest height: a razorback ridge, old fixed ropes, slick mossy rock and a poorly marked trail. Second, the Cross-Island Track that cuts across the island past the iconic rock pillar known as The Needle (Te Rua Manga), with steep rope- and chain-assisted sections finishing at a swimmable waterfall. The sources below — summit footage, trail vlogs, a detailed bushwalking guide and a guided-trek operator — are all verified live.
