Description
Taygetus (Ταΰγετος) is the mountain range that dominates the southern Peloponnese in Greece, rising above the historic town of Sparta. Its highest summit, Profitis Ilias (2,407 m), is also the highest point of the entire Peloponnese and is crowned by a small summit chapel. The mountain is steeped in history — from ancient Greek mythology to its role in Spartan life — and is today one of mainland Greece's most sought-after mountain climbs. The classic route to the summit starts from the Pigi Maganiari spring (~980 m), where the asphalt road from Paleopanagia ends and water is available year-round, then climbs past the mountain refuge (Taygetos Refuge) to the top; the upper section forms part of the international E4 trail. The round trip takes about 8–8.5 hours with substantial elevation gain. From the summit the panorama sweeps across the whole Peloponnese and the Aegean Sea; in clear dawn or dusk conditions the distinctive pyramid-shaped shadow of Taygetus is sometimes projected onto the horizon.

Routes
Pigi Maganiari → Taygetos Refuge → Profitis Ilias (2.407 m)
Sedang–berat (jarak panjang & perolehan tinggi, non-teknis)The classic route to the highest point of the Peloponnese. It starts from the Pigi Maganiari spring (~980 m), where the asphalt road from Paleopanagia ends, with year-round water and a large parking area. The trail climbs to the mountain refuge (Taygetos Refuge); the section from the refuge to the summit forms part of the international E4 trail. The round trip is about 8–8.5 hours with substantial gain; the upper section is open, rocky and windy, ending at the small summit chapel of Profitis Ilias with panoramas over the whole Peloponnese and the Aegean Sea.
SourceRute normal via Taygetos Refuge (sisi barat)
Sedang–beratAn option that splits the ascent over two days with an overnight at the Taygetos Refuge, easing the elevation gain and allowing a dawn summit. From the refuge the summit path (part of the E4) climbs to Profitis Ilias. SummitPost summarises several approach variants and seasonal conditions; the upper section remains open and rocky, with snow that can linger into early summer.
SourceClimbing Experiences
The Taygetus experience centres on the long climb to Profitis Ilias, the highest peak of the Peloponnese, with its small summit chapel. Recurring themes: starting from the Pigi Maganiari spring, resting or overnighting at the mountain refuge, the open, rocky upper section that forms part of the E4 trail, the contrast between the hot lower slopes and the cold, windy summit, and the wide sea panoramas and the mountain's distinctive pyramid shadow. English, German and Greek vlogs alike stress the stamina required and the reward of the views.
