Information
- Elevation
- 223 m
- Country
- Papua Nugini (PG)
- Location / Range
- Kaldera Rabaul, Semenanjung Gazelle, Pulau New Britain, Provinsi East New Britain
- Mountain type
- Kerucut piroklastik / stratovolcano kecil yang aktif — sub-ventilasi di tepi timur kaldera Rabaul (sumber elevasi bervariasi ~223–250 m)
- Volcanic?
- Yes — volcano
- Coordinates
- -4.2711, 152.2028
- Difficulty
Description
Tavurvur is a small but highly active volcano — an ash cone of about 223 m (other sources give ~250 m) that is one of the most active vents on the eastern rim of the Rabaul caldera, on the Gazelle Peninsula of New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea. Despite its modest size, Tavurvur is globally famous: its 1994 eruption (together with Vulcan across the harbour) destroyed much of the town of Rabaul and forced the provincial capital to relocate to Kokopo, while a spectacular eruption on 29 August 2014 produced viral shock-wave footage. For adventure travellers, Tavurvur is usually reached by boat across Simpson Harbour from Rabaul, then a short climb (about 40–60 minutes) up loose ash and pumice slopes to a crater rim hissing with sulphur fumaroles — often done before dawn to catch sunrise. On the ash fields at its base, locals harvest megapode (scrubfowl) eggs incubated by the volcanic ground heat. It is a genuine 'climb an active volcano' experience, so the current activity status from the Rabaul Volcano Observatory must be checked first.

Routes
Lingkar ladang abu & sarang burung gosong (megapoda)
Jalan datar di ladang abu; tetap kawasan vulkanik aktifA flat extension from the landing point along part of the volcano's base, crossing ash fields pocked with craters left by the 'lava bombs' of the 1994 and 2014 eruptions. On this warm volcanic ground locals harvest megapode (scrubfowl) eggs — a distinctive nature-and-culture experience of the Rabaul area, done with a local guide.
SourcePenyeberangan perahu Simpson Harbour + pendakian kerucut abu ke tepi kawah
Fisik mudah–sedang, TETAPI risiko vulkanik tinggi (gunung berapi aktif)The standard route to climb Tavurvur. From Rabaul, visitors cross Simpson Harbour by boat and land on a black-sand beach near hot springs, then climb loose ash and pumice slopes for about 40–60 minutes to a crater rim hissing with sulphur fumaroles. A local guide, sturdy footwear and a pre-dawn start to beat the heat are recommended. Checking the activity status from the Rabaul Volcano Observatory beforehand is essential — eruptions can happen suddenly.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on Tavurvur revolve around one rare thing: climbing a genuinely active volcano. Videos and trip reports repeat the same pattern — crossing Simpson Harbour by boat from Rabaul, landing on a black-sand beach near hot springs, then a short climb up loose ash and pumice slopes to a crater rim hissing with sulphur fumaroles. Many set out before dawn to beat the heat and watch sunrise from the crater lip. Other recurring themes: ash fields pocked with craters from the 'lava bombs' of the 1994 and 2014 eruptions, locals harvesting megapode eggs from the warm ground, extreme heat, and the awareness that this is a closely monitored mountain. Footage of the spectacular 2014 eruption also made Tavurvur a global icon.
