Description

Tanete Baitam is a forested peak in the highlands of West Sulawesi province, Indonesia — in the vicinity of Mamasa Regency — at roughly 2.934°S 119.264°E, about 1,400 km east of Jakarta. In the Bugis and Toraja-Mamasa languages, "tanete" means hill or mountain, so the toponym is common across the mountainous western part of Sulawesi. According to digital-elevation-model (DEM) data compiled by the GeoNames/NGA-GNS geographic database, its summit stands about 1,735 m above sea level with a local prominence of about 80 m above the surrounding terrain and a base width of about 0.47 km. Unlike many other NGA-GNS toponyms in Indonesia that are low knolls, Tanete Baitam sits in genuine mountain terrain: the land is hilly to the southwest and mountainous to the northeast, with the nearest higher point being Buttu Tonggo (about 2,763 m) some 8.4 km to the north. The area is almost entirely forested with a cool montane climate (mean temperature ~17 °C, coldest around 15 °C in March, rainfall ~2,895 mm/yr). No hiking trail, tourism coverage, or specific local record could be found for this peak; this profile is compiled from open geographic databases, and its data limitations are stated plainly.
