Description

Takarunga, also known as Mount Victoria, is an 87-metre scoria cone in Devonport on Auckland's North Shore, New Zealand — the highest point on the North Shore peninsula and part of the Auckland Volcanic Field. The Māori name 'Takarunga' means 'the hill standing above', and its summit was once a fortified pā whose terracing is still visible. The top gives sweeping views over the Waitematā Harbour, the Auckland city skyline, Rangitoto island and the neighbouring cone of Maungauika/North Head. The summit is dotted with colonial history: a large mushroom-shaped water tank, a signal mast that once guided ships into the harbour, and a 19th-century coastal-defence 'disappearing gun'. Sitting directly above central Devonport and only a short walk away, Takarunga is a relaxed favourite for picnics, sunsets and views. It is managed as a sacred maunga by the Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority.
