Description

Takarunga / Mount Victoria is a scoria cone in Devonport, Auckland, overlooking Waitematā Harbour and the city. The Tūpuna Maunga Authority gives the summit elevation as 66 metres; Wikidata still records 87 metres. Terraces and kūmara storage pits survive from its Māori pā. The colourful mushroom-shaped features on top are vents for a buried reservoir. A harbour signal station and gun fort add further layers of history. Walkers enter from Kerr Street; private vehicles cannot drive to the summit, with special arrangements for visitors with limited mobility.

Routes

Kerr Street / Victoria Road ke Puncak

Jalan menanjak / uphill walk

From Devonport wharf, follow Victoria Road and Kerr Street to the entrance and road up to the summit. Visit Devonport mentions a 10–20 minute walk without defining precise endpoints or a return duration; it is not used as a round-trip estimate. That tourism page’s vehicle information is outdated: follow the maunga authority’s current restrictions.

Puncak ke Church Street via Flagstaff Lane

An alternative descent recorded by sconzani in 2014 follows a track on the eastern side of the summit, emerging through Flagstaff Lane onto Church Street. The author then continues to Cambria Reserve. The source gives no duration or distance; check signs and access on site before using this path.

Climbing Experiences

Four visit videos complement sconzani’s account of walking from Devonport wharf up Takarunga, then descending via Flagstaff Lane before continuing to North Head. The blog describes an uphill walk with opportunities to pause for photographs. The Tūpuna Maunga Authority page provides management context, separate from visitors’ personal accounts.
