Description

Taebaeksan (태백산, 太白山, 1,566.7 m) is a sacred mountain in the Taebaek range, stretching from the city of Taebaek in Gangwon Province to Bonghwa County in Gyeongsangbuk Province. It is a key point along the Baekdu-daegan — the main mountain spine of the Korean peninsula — and on 22 August 2016 it was designated South Korea's 22nd national park. Its main peaks, Janggunbong (장군봉) and Munsubong, have been ritual sites since ancient times: on the summit ridge stands Cheonjedan (천제단), a stone altar where offerings to heaven have long been made and still are today. For hikers, Taebaeksan is best known as a 'first-tier' beginner snow mountain — its trails are relatively gentle and well maintained, while the winter scenery is spectacular: groves of frozen old yew trees (jumok), thick rime/snow flowers, and panoramas of snow-clad ridgelines. Each new year the Taebaek Snow Festival draws thousands of visitors. Beyond its spiritual and scenic value, the area is hydrologically important as a headwater region for major Korean rivers. The most popular route is the Yuilsa (유일사) trail, the shortest line, passing yew groves on the way to Cheonjedan, with an alternative from the Danggol (당골) valley.

Routes

Jalur Danggol (당골) dari alun-alun Danggol

Sedang; sedikit lebih panjang dari Yuilsa, melewati area kuil dan hutan sebelum naik ke punggungan puncak
±5–6 jam pulang-pergi

A classic alternative from the Danggol (당골) side, home to the Taebaek Snow Festival each new year. The trail follows a valley and forest, passing cultural/temple areas, then climbs to the summit ridge toward Cheonjedan and Munsubong (문수봉). It is often combined with the Yuilsa trail into a loop (up one, down the other), letting hikers enjoy both sides of the mountain in a single day.

Jalur Yuilsa (유일사) — rute terpendek

Mudah–sedang; jalur tertata dengan tangga kayu, ramah pemula, tetapi dingin dan angin kuat di punggungan puncak saat musim dingin
±4–5 jam pulang-pergi

The shortest and most popular route to Taebaeksan's summit ridge. From the Yuilsa parking area, the trail climbs gradually past groves of old yew (jumok) trees — an iconic frozen sight in winter — up to Cheonjedan (천제단), the stone heaven-altar near the Janggunbong/Cheonwangdan summit. Its gentle grade and good maintenance make Taebaeksan one of Korea's most beginner-friendly snow mountains; still bring warm layers and light traction (microspikes) in winter.

Climbing Experiences

Taebaeksan (태백산, 1,567 m) is widely known as Korea's most beginner-friendly snow mountain — gentle, well-maintained trails paired with extraordinary winter scenery: frozen old yew groves, rime/snow flowers, and the Cheonjedan heaven altar on the summit ridge. The Yuilsa (유일사) route is the shortest and most popular. The clips below — from English-language vlogs to Korean trail guides — capture the real experience of hiking Taebaeksan, especially in winter when the mountain is at its most iconic.
