Information
- Elevation
- 1.762 m
- Country
- Kroasia (HR)
- Location / Range
- Pegunungan Biokovo, di atas kota Makarska, Dalmasia (Kroasia)
- Mountain type
- Puncak tertinggi masif karst gamping Biokovo di Dalmasia, menjulang curam langsung dari pesisir Adriatik; bukan gunung berapi
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 43.3423, 17.0535
- Difficulty
- Bervariasi.
Description
Sveti Jure (1,762 m) is the highest peak of the Biokovo massif in Dalmatia, Croatia, rising almost sheer from the Adriatic coast above the town of Makarska — one of Europe's most dramatic sea-to-summit views. On a clear day the summit view sweeps across the Makarska Riviera, the Dalmatian islands, and reportedly even the Apennines in Italy some 252 km away. A television transmitter tower occupies the true summit, while 50 metres below stands the chapel of Saint George — the highest church in Croatia — which holds an annual Mass on the last Saturday of July. Sveti Jure can be reached via the 'Biokovska cesta', Croatia's highest road running about 31 km from Makarska, or on foot from the coast on routes such as the one via Vošac — a long, exposed ascent climbing thousands of metres through arid karst terrain. The whole area is protected as Biokovo Nature Park, now also popular for its glass-floored Biokovo Skywalk. The characteristic hazards here are the fierce bura wind and rapidly changing weather.

Routes
Biokovska cesta (jalan aspal tertinggi Kroasia)
Ringan (berkendara) — akses termudah, tetap dalam taman berbayarA non-hiking alternative: drive the Biokovska cesta, the roughly 31 km highest road in Croatia, winding up the Biokovo massif from Makarska, then take a short walk to the summit area of Sveti Jure with its transmitter tower and chapel of Saint George. Ideal for enjoying the panorama without a full climb; still beware of the bura wind and fog that can arrive suddenly.
SourceDari Makarska via Vošac
Berat — pendakian panjang dan terpapar melalui medan karstThe classic ascent from the coast: from the Makarska area climb the Biokovo escarpment to the Vošac ridge, then continue across arid karst terrain to the summit of Sveti Jure. It climbs thousands of metres from near sea level with little shade and scarce water, so water management, sun protection, and an early start are essential. The reward is a dramatic sea-to-summit panorama.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Hikers' accounts of Sveti Jure highlight the dramatic contrast between the Adriatic at its foot and the high, arid Biokovo summit. Croatian- and English-language videos show long ascents from the coast — for example from the hamlet of Milići or via Vošac — across open karst terrain, as well as visits via the Biokovska cesta road. Recurring themes: sweeping views over the Makarska Riviera and the Dalmatian islands, the transmitter tower and chapel of Saint George at the top, the scarcity of water and shade, and the bura wind that can blow hard.
