Description

Suur Munamägi — literally 'Big Egg Mountain' — is the highest point of Estonia and of all the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) at 318 m. This wooded hill lies near the village of Haanja in Võru County, in the southeastern corner of Estonia close to the Latvian and Russian borders, within the gently rolling, glacially-formed Haanja Upland. Because the summit is covered by forest, an observation tower has long stood on top; the current 29.1 m reinforced-concrete tower (reopened after renovation in 2017) lets visitors see far into Latvia and Russia on a clear day, complete with a lift and glass deck. 'Climbing' this mountain is just a short walk from the Haanja car park along a forest path and steps — more a symbolic pilgrimage to the 'roof of the Baltics' and a family day-trip than a demanding hike. The surrounding Haanja Nature Park offers nature trails, lakes and other hills such as Vällamägi to explore.

Climbing Experiences

Reaching Suur Munamägi (318 m), the highest point of Estonia and of all the Baltic states, is just a short ~15-minute walk from the Munamäe car park in Haanja village along a stepped forest path with only about 60 m of gain from the base of the hill. Because the summit is forested, the real draw is the 29.1 m reinforced-concrete observation tower on top — climbable by stairs or a glass lift — which opens up a wide panorama reaching into Latvia and Russia on a clear day. Many visitors treat it as a symbolic pilgrimage to the roof of the Baltics and a family outing, often combined with exploring the surrounding Haanja Nature Park: other hills, lakes and nature trails. The tower opens seasonally, with a paid ticket to climb to the upper deck.
