Description

Spitzkoppe is a group of bald granite peaks (inselbergs) rising dramatically from the flat plains of the Namib Desert in Namibia, between Usakos and Swakopmund. Its granite is more than 120 million years old and the highest outcrop reaches about 1,728 m above sea level — some 670 m above the desert floor below — earning it the nickname "the Matterhorn of Namibia." The appeal is varied: a short walk to the iconic natural Rock Arch for sunrise/sunset photos, exploring ancient San rock paintings at Bushman Paradise, camping under exceptionally dark, star-filled skies, and a challenging climb of the main peak. Ascending the Große Spitzkoppe combines trekking, exposed scrambling through cracks and rock tunnels, and roped sections, and requires a local guide. The area is community-run through the Spitzkoppe Community Rest Camp.

Routes

Bushman Paradise & scramble lukisan batu San

Sedang (sedikit scrambling, slab batu berbantuan rantai)

A guided scramble up the granite to the Bushman Paradise area to view ancient San rock paintings and explore the surrounding inselbergs. There is a chain-assisted rock slab; a guide helps with route-finding and explains the paintings' historical context.
