Description
South Sister (3,159 m) is the highest of the three twin volcanoes known as the "Three Sisters" in Oregon's Cascade Range, and the state's third-highest peak. A stratovolcano that last erupted about 2,000 years ago — and still closely monitored by the USGS after satellite imagery detected ground inflation ("the bulge") from 2001 — South Sister is one of Oregon's most popular non-technical climbs. At the height of summer the South Sister Climbers Trail from Devils Lake can be walked up without alpine gear, though it is long and tiring with loose volcanic scree near the top. The summit holds a shallow crater with a small lake (Teardrop Pool, one of Oregon's highest bodies of water) and views of Middle and North Sister, Broken Top and Mount Bachelor.

Routes
Green Lakes / Moraine Lake approach (variasi)
Berat (non-teknis, jarak lebih panjang)A variation for those wanting to camp: approaching South Sister via the Green Lakes / Moraine Lake area in the Three Sisters Wilderness, camping, then making the summit push. It adds distance and a chance to enjoy alpine lakes and Broken Top views, joining the main scree ridge near the top.
SourceSouth Sister Climbers Trail (via Devils Lake)
Berat (walk-up/scramble non-teknis kelas 1–2 di musim panas)The standard and most popular route. From the Devils Lake Trailhead on the Cascade Lakes Highway (~1,680 m), the trail climbs through forest to the Wickiup Plain and Moraine Lake, then keeps ascending tiring volcanic scree ridges to the 3,159 m summit. Non-technical at the height of summer, but long and physically demanding; early season still holds snow/ice needing gear. A quota'd Central Cascades Wilderness Permit is required in the busy season.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing South Sister almost always means the South Sister Climbers Trail from Devils Lake: a long non-technical ascent (~18 km round-trip, ~1,580 m gain) through forest, past Moraine Lake, then up volcanic scree ridges to the summit. Climbers' vlogs consistently cite the tiring distance, loose scree in the upper half, fast-changing weather, and the views of Middle and North Sister plus the small crater lake at the top.
