Description

The Soufrière Hills (about 1,050 m) is an active, complex stratovolcano that dominates the island of Montserrat, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean. After a long dormancy it reawakened in 1995 and erupted repeatedly until 2010 (its last eruption was in 2013), turning more than half the island into an uninhabited exclusion zone. Pyroclastic flows and ashfall buried the capital, Plymouth — now a 'ghost city' entombed in volcanic debris — and forced about two-thirds of the population to leave; the eruption of 25 June 1997 killed 19 people. Its summit height is not fixed because lava domes keep growing and collapsing; the former high point of Chances Peak has been overtaken by newer domes. It is not a hiking objective: the summit lies within a forbidden zone and is only viewed from safe northern vantage points such as Garibaldi Hill and Jack Boy Hill, while its activity is closely monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO).

Experiences at the Soufrière Hills are not about summiting but about witnessing and understanding the volcano that has erupted since 1995 and its imprint on Montserrat. Footage shows eruptions and pyroclastic flows, the ash-buried town of Plymouth inside the exclusion zone, flights and tours over the 'ghost city', and documentaries explaining the eruption science and the story of the island's evacuation — all observed from the safe northern zone.
