Description
Sobaeksan (1,439 m at Birobong peak) is the principal mountain of the Sobaek Range in South Korea, straddling the border between Danyang (North Chungcheong) and Yeongju (North Gyeongsang). Protected as Sobaeksan National Park since 1987, it is among Korea's most popular hiking destinations. Its signature draw is the broad, open summit ridge with meadows of royal azaleas (cheoljjuk) that bloom pink in late May to early June, plus dramatic rime ice and snow in winter. Its peaks include Birobong (the highpoint), Yeonhwabong and Gukmangbong. The historic Buseoksa temple and other monasteries sit on its slopes, and an astronomical observatory stands near the ridge. Classic routes climb from the Huibangsa or Cheeom-dae areas onto the main ridge, offering year-round trekking whose landscape changes sharply with the seasons.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing Sobaeksan (Birobong, 1,439 m) is famous for its broad, plateau-like summit ridge — many call it the "Alps of Korea." Hikers' accounts stress recurring themes: a steady but not overly steep climb on well-maintained wooden-step trails, frequently very strong summit winds with sharply dropping temperatures even on clear days, and two headline seasons — pink royal azaleas (cheoljjuk) in late May to early June, and rime ice (sanggodae) and snow in December–February. The most popular route is the shortest Yeongju-side approach (Samga) to Birobong, while the Cheondong → Birobong → Gungmangbong → Eouigok traverse (~17 km) follows the long ridge that forms the longest stretch of the Baekdudaegan range. The south-side route via Huibangsa temple and Yeonhwabong is also common.
