Description

Snowmass Mountain (4,297 m / 14,099 ft) is a Colorado fourteener in the Elk Mountains, within the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. It takes its name from the large permanent snowfield on its east face — not the separate Snowmass ski resort. Because it is remote, it is usually climbed as a multi-day backpacking trip: the standard route follows the Snowmass Creek Trail some 17 km to Snowmass Lake for an overnight, then next day crosses a notoriously tiring boulder field before ascending the east-face snowfield and a Class 3 scramble to the summit ridge. Snowmass is one of the few Colorado fourteeners commonly done as a snow climb because its snowfield lingers late, so an ice axe and crampons are often needed. The summit panorama takes in iconic neighbours such as Capitol Peak and Hagerman Peak.

Routes

East Slopes / Snowfield via Snowmass Lake (jalur standar)

Kelas 3 (sering mendaki salju)
±2–3 hari pulang-pergi (±35 km PP)

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Snowmass Mountain is usually a multi-day backpacking trip via the Snowmass Creek Trail to Snowmass Lake, then a crossing of the tiring boulder field, an ascent of the east-face snowfield, and a Class 3 scramble to the summit ridge. Some reports use the S Ridge variant and descend the West Slopes. The videos below document summit climbs of this 14er (not the ski resort), including the S Ridge and trail guides.
