Description
Snøhetta (2,286 m) is the highest peak of the Dovrefjell massif and one of Norway's most iconic mountains — long regarded as the country's highest point before modern surveys placed Galdhøpiggen in Jotunheimen higher. Nicknamed the "Queen of Dovrefjell", it stands at the heart of Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park, a wilderness that is home to musk oxen, wild reindeer and the Arctic fox. The normal route starts at the Snøheim cabin run by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT), reached by a tourist bus from Hjerkinn (~30 minutes) in summer. From Snøheim, a marked trail climbs about 6 km with roughly 800 m of ascent across scree and boulder fields to the summit; most hikers need 6–8 hours round trip including breaks. The summit view spans the entire Dovre plateau. The area is also famous for the chance of encountering musk oxen — hikers must keep a safe distance of at least 200 metres.

Climbing Experiences
Climbing Snøhetta is a long but non-technical hike starting from the DNT's Snøheim cabin, reached by a summer tourist bus from Hjerkinn (~30 minutes). From Snøheim, a marked trail climbs about 6 km with roughly 800 m of ascent across scree and boulder fields to the summit; most hikers need 6–8 hours round trip including breaks. The season follows the Snøheim bus — late June to early October. Beyond the summit, the Dovrefjell area is renowned as one of Europe's best places to see wild musk oxen; hikers must keep a minimum distance of 200 metres for safety. The sub-arctic weather can change quickly, so warm, windproof clothing is essential even in summer.
