Description

Sněžka (1,603 m), known as Śnieżka on the Polish side and Schneekoppe in German, is the highest mountain of the Czech Republic and the high point of the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains / Karkonosze) along the Czech–Polish border. Its summit sits exactly on the border, marked by iconic buildings: the 17th-century baroque Chapel of St. Lawrence, the highest post office in Czechia, and a modern disc-shaped meteorological observatory (Poštovna). Because of its height and exposed position, the summit is famous for extreme weather — strong winds and fog can appear suddenly even when the valleys below are clear. The mountain is very popular and can be climbed from the Czech side via the town of Pec pod Sněžkou (the classic Obří důl valley route or the Růžová hora ridge) or from the Polish side via Karpacz. A two-section cable car from Pec pod Sněžkou also carries visitors to near the summit, making Sněžka one of the most accessible high peaks in Central Europe. Climbing it is considered a must for Czech hikers and is part of the 'Crown of Polish Mountains' (Korona Gór Polski) collection for Polish hikers.

Routes

Via Karpacz (sisi Polandia, jalur merah)

Sedang, sangat indah; ramai di musim puncak — mulai pagi
7.70 km +900 m ~3,5 jam naik dari Karpacz

The most popular and most scenic Polish route starts from Karpacz, passing the Dom Śląski (Slezský dům) hut at the saddle before the final climb to the summit on the border. Many hikers cross over from Karpacz (Poland) to Pec pod Sněžkou (Czechia) or vice versa. It gets very crowded in peak season, so an early start is recommended.

Via Obří důl (sisi Ceko, jalur lembah klasik)

Sedang; jalur jelas namun tanjakan akhir terjal — RAWAN LONGSORAN salju di musim dingin, hanya untuk kondisi bebas salju
8.50 km +817 m 2,5–3,5 jam naik dari Pec pod Sněžkou

The blue trail follows the Obří důl valley along the Úpa River from Pec pod Sněžkou, passing the former Kovárna mine, climbing to the Obří sedlo saddle, then joining the red trail for the final ascent to the summit. The steepest part is the final climb. The valley is beautiful but its slopes are avalanche-prone in winter — only attempt it snow-free.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Pec pod Sněžkou → Lembah Obří důl (Kovárna)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam

Jalur biru menyusuri Sungai Úpa; lembah glasial indah; melewati bekas tambang Kovárna

  2. 2

Obří důl → Obří sedlo (pelana)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam

Tanjakan terjal; lereng rawan longsoran di musim dingin

  3. 3

    Obří sedlo → Puncak Sněžka (1.603 m)

    ⏱ 30–45 menit 1.603 mdpl

Menyambung jalur merah; puncak dengan kapel St. Lawrence, kantor pos & observatorium

Via Růžová hora (sisi Ceko, jalur punggungan + opsi kereta gantung)

Sedang; jalur paling populer dari sisi Ceko, bisa dipersingkat dengan kereta gantung
6.10 km +800 m 1,5–3,5 jam naik dari Pec pod Sněžkou

The most popular Czech ascent climbs via the Růžová hora ridge. It can be combined with the two-section cable car (Pec pod Sněžkou → Růžová hora → near the summit) to save effort, making it suitable for families or hikers wanting a lighter option. The final climb is still exposed and windy.

Climbing Experiences

Sněžka is one of the most accessible high peaks in Central Europe, so it is climbed by thousands year-round. From the Czech side the main trailhead is Pec pod Sněžkou: hikers can choose the dramatic Obří důl valley route, the ridge route via Růžová hora, or save effort with the two-section cable car to near the summit. From the Polish side a popular route starts at Karpacz, passing the Dom Śląski hut at the saddle before the final climb. A common reported experience: the trails are very well marked, but summit weather can turn extreme within minutes — strong wind, fog, and temperatures far colder than the valley. Many combine the climb with exploring the Krkonoše/Karkonosze ridge. Below are real, verified-live documentations from hikers.
