Description

Snæfellsjökull (1,446 m) is a volcano in Iceland, a notable feature of Iceland's volcanic landscape.

Routes

Via Arnarstapi — Pendakian Gletser Berpemandu (Musim Panas)

The most common route to climb Snæfellsjökull from the south, starting from the fishing village of Arnarstapi (20 m a.s.l.) on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The trail climbs through lava fields, alpine grass, and moraine zones before entering the Snæfellsjökull Glacier at around 900 m elevation. Because the glacier has hidden crevasses and unpredictable ice conditions, Snæfellsjökull National Park requires climbers to use certified guides or join official tours. Snowcat tours (wide-wheeled motorised vehicles for snow terrain) operate from Arnarstapi and Ólafsvík, carrying visitors directly to the summit crater without climbing — very popular for those who want the glacier view without technical mountaineering. Foot ascent with a guide provides a far more immersive experience, including geological narrative and Jules Verne history from local guides. From the summit crater (approximately 1,446 m), views encompass the entire Snæfellsnes peninsula, Faxaflói Bay, Reykjavik, and Iceland's Highland mountains.

Route Segments

  1. 1

    Arnarstapi (20 m) → Batas Vegetasi / Zona Lava Atas (~600 m)

    ⏱ 2–2,5 jam 600 mdpl

Jalur melewati ladang lava basaltik khas Islandia dan padang rumput; penanda jalur berupa cairn; cuaca bisa berubah sangat cepat — bawa pakaian waterproof dan ekstra hangat

  2. 2

    Zona Lava Atas (~600 m) → Batas Gletser (~900 m)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam 900 mdpl

Medan semakin curam; moraine glasial; mulai crampon di sini (disediakan guide jika tur resmi); batas gletser bervariasi tiap tahun karena mundurnya gletser akibat perubahan iklim

  3. 3

    Batas Gletser (~900 m) → Kawah Puncak Snæfellsjökull (~1.446 m)

    ⏱ 2–3 jam 1.446 mdpl

Via Ólafsvík (Sisi Utara) — Rute Snowcat & Pendakian Alternatif

Moderat (bersama guide/snowcat); Berat jika mandiri — tidak direkomendasikan tanpa panduan resmi
12.00 km +1100 m 5–7 jam pulang-pergi untuk pendakian kaki; 1–2 jam untuk tur snowcat

The northern approach via the small town of Ólafsvík provides a different perspective of Snæfellsjökull compared to the Arnarstapi southern route. Commercial snowcat operations run most frequently from this side, carrying visitors along motorised glacier tracks up the north slope to the summit crater. For climbers wishing to circumnavigate the glacier or complete a traverse, combining an ascent from Arnarstapi with a descent via Ólafsvík (or vice versa) is ideal. The foot trail from the north crosses wetter Icelandic lava fields and grassland compared to the drier southern side. As with all Snæfellsjökull glacier routes, certified guides from park-registered tour operators are mandatory.

Climbing Experiences

Snæfellsjökull (1,446 m) is a glacier-capped stratovolcano at the tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland, famous far beyond its modest elevation. Jules Verne used it as the entrance to the underground world in his classic novel 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' (1864), and that mystical reputation persists today — the area is considered one of seven global energy centres by spiritual communities. Physically, the ascent to the glacier summit can be made almost year-round with a guide or snowcat, though the best conditions are July–August. Snæfellsjökull National Park (established 2001) protects the entire peninsula tip, making it the only Icelandic national park that also encompasses marine territory to its jurisdictional limit. On a clear day, the summit view encompasses the entire Snæfellsnes peninsula, Reykjavik in the distance, and even Greenland on the horizon in exceptionally clear conditions.
