Description

Slieve Donard (850 m) is the highest mountain in Northern Ireland and the highest point of the whole province of Ulster, rising at the eastern edge of the Mourne Mountains in County Down directly above the town of Newcastle and the Irish Sea. This granite peak is famous for the Mourne Wall — an early-20th-century dry-stone wall that crosses 15 summits and meets at a small stone tower on its top — and for two ancient summit cairns, one believed to be the highest known passage tomb in Ireland. On a clear day the summit gives views to the Isle of Man, Wales, Scotland, and the Wicklow and Donegal ranges. Though not a technical climb, its steep ascent and fast-changing coastal weather still demand caution.

Routes

Jalur Bloody Bridge

Menengah (lebih sepi, akhir yang curam)
10.40 km 4–5 jam pulang-pergi

A quieter alternative from the Bloody Bridge car park, about 5 km before Newcastle. It follows the Bloody River on a steady climb to the Bog of Donard, then steepens sharply, following the Mourne Wall to the summit. A good choice to avoid the crowds of the Glen River route.

Jalur Glen River (dari Newcastle / Donard Park)

Menengah (menanjak curam, non-teknis)
9.20 km 3–4 jam pulang-pergi

The most popular and direct normal route. It starts from Donard Park in Newcastle, follows the Glen River through pine, birch, and oak woodland with several bridge crossings, then out onto open slopes to the Mourne Wall. From the wall junction (the Saddle between Donard and Commedagh), follow the Mourne Wall straight up to the rocky summit (~4.6 km one way). Steep but clearly guided by the wall.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Slieve Donard usually starts from Donard Park in Newcastle, following the Glen River through pine, birch, and oak woodland with several bridge crossings, then out onto open slopes to the Mourne Wall, which is followed straight up to the rocky summit (about 4.6 km one way and fairly steep). A quieter alternative is the Bloody Bridge route (~10 km return) up the Bloody River to the Bog of Donard before a steep final push. Hikers stress warm layers, a windproof jacket, and a map and compass because mist often shrouds the upper ridge; the reward is a panorama of the Irish Sea and, on a clear day, the Isle of Man, Scotland, and Wales.
