Description
Similaun (about 3,606 m) is a snow-capped peak in the Ötztal Alps, right on the border between Austrian Tyrol and Italian South Tyrol. It is famous for two things: as one of the more accessible classic glacier tours (Hochtour) in the Ötztal region, and for its proximity to where 'Ötzi', the roughly 5,300-year-old Iceman mummy, was found in 1991 on an icy ridge not far from the summit. The normal route usually starts from the village of Vent on the Austrian side up to the Martin-Busch-Hütte, or from Vernagt (Schnals) on the Italian side up to the Similaunhütte at the Niederjoch, then crosses the glacier to the top. Though not technically hard, the glaciated terrain demands a rope, crampons and awareness of crevasses. For climbers seeking a taste of a snowy three-thousander with sweeping views across the Ötztal Alps, Similaun is both a historic and rewarding choice.

Routes
SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences of climbing Similaun are well documented as a classic Ötztal Alps glacier tour (Hochtour), with many vlogs from both sides — Vent (Austria) via the Martin-Busch-Hütte and Vernagt/Schnals (Italy) via the Similaunhütte. Climbers' accounts stress the roped glacier crossing, the use of crampons, overnighting at a high hut, and sweeping views over the Ötztal ridges in clear weather. Several also highlight the final ridge/summit push and how the snow conditions change with the season.
