Description

Signal de Botrange (694 m) is the highest point of Belgium — and the highest point of Wallonia, of the Ardennes, and of the mainland (European) Benelux. It is not a sharp peak but the highest swell of a broad plateau in the Hautes Fagnes (High Fens / Hohes Venn), Belgium's largest peat-bog nature reserve. Because it rises only slightly above the surrounding plateau and a road crosses it, the 6 m 'Butte Baltia' stone mound was built in 1923 so visitors could reach a symbolic 700 m; it is now topped by a small observation tower, a monument and a café. Botrange's real draw is not the summit but the unusual high-moor landscape — grass, peat pools and woodland explored via a network of wooden boardwalks from the Botrange Nature Centre and the Mont Rigi station. The area has the coldest and snowiest microclimate in Belgium, making it a year-round destination for walking, cross-country skiing and nature photography.

Signal de Botrange via Fagne de la Poleûr (loop boardwalk)

Mudah — sebagian besar jalur papan kayu (caillebotis); bisa tergenang saat basah, disarankan sepatu tahan air
11.00 km +160 m ± 4 jam

A boardwalk loop across the High Fens peat bogs combining two waymarked trails: the didactic Fagne de la Poleûr loop (blue) and the loop up to Belgium's highest point, Signal de Botrange (694 m, red). Start at Mont Rigi or the nearby Baraque Michel car park. Terrain is almost flat with only ~160 m of cumulative gain; wooden footbridges float over the moor and shortcuts are forbidden to protect the biotope.

Climbing Experiences

Visiting Signal de Botrange (694 m), the highest point of Belgium, is almost never a 'climb' in the usual sense — a road crosses the summit and there is a café and a small observation tower there. What visitors really come for is walking the network of wooden boardwalks (caillebotis/duckboards) that float over the peat bogs of the Hautes Fagnes (High Fens / Hohes Venn). Popular routes are loops from the Botrange Nature Centre or Mont Rigi, such as the Fagne de la Poleûr and the traverse to Baraque Michel, with only tens of metres of cumulative ascent but a distinctive high-moor landscape that changes dramatically with the seasons. The area has the coldest, snowiest microclimate in Belgium, so it suits family walks, cross-country skiing in winter and nature photography. Key rule: stay on the boardwalks to protect the fragile peatland biotope.
