Description

The Shere Hills are a range of undulating hills and granite rock formations on the Jos Plateau, about 10 km east of Jos, the capital of Plateau State in Nigeria's Middle Belt. Their highest peak reaches roughly 1,759 m — the highest point of the Jos Plateau and one of the highest points in Nigeria after Chappal Waddi and Mount Dimlang (Vogel Peak). The area is known for its cool climate and views of cliffs and giant boulders, including the twin formations popularly nicknamed 'Gog and Magog'. Shere Hills is one of central Nigeria's best-known destinations for hiking, rock climbing and the outdoors, and once hosted a mountaineering training centre. The walk to the top is generally non-technical and can be done in a day, though visitors are advised to check local security conditions first.

Routes

Hiking harian ke punggungan & puncak (via Gog dan Magog)

Mudah–menengah; jalur setapak dengan scramble batu ringan, non-teknis
±2–5 jam pulang-pergi (tergantung titik yang dituju)

The most common day-hike route at Shere Hills starts from the hills east of Jos. Walkers follow footpaths among giant granite boulders, passing or approaching the twin 'Gog and Magog' formation, before climbing to ridges and summits with sweeping views over the Jos Plateau. Most of the route is non-technical walking with light scrambling on rocky sections. As regional security can change, hikers are advised to use a local guide and check current conditions before setting out.
