Description

Shengena Peak (~2,463 m) is the highest point of the South Pare Mountains in Same District, Kilimanjaro Region, northern Tanzania, part of the ancient, biodiversity-rich Eastern Arc chain. Unlike neighbouring volcanoes such as Kilimanjaro, the Pare are old uplifted crystalline block mountains (non-volcanic). The summit lies within the Chome Nature Forest Reserve, a moist montane forest that shelters many endemic species and is a birdwatching destination. Climbing it is usually a guided forest trek ascending from the villages at the foot of the range through misty jungle to the top; the terrain is slippery and wet rather than technical, but demands fitness and a reserve permit. The average elevation of the South Pare highlands is only about 907 m, so Shengena rises well above the surrounding landscape.

Routes

Shengena Peak Trail (via Chome Nature Forest Reserve)

Menengah, trek hutan menanjak yang licin ke puncak ~2.463 m
Day-hike berpemandu (bisa lebih bila dari desa jauh)

The main route to the Shengena summit (~2,463 m) threads through the moist montane forest of the Chome Nature Forest Reserve. This guided climb ascends from the villages at the foot of the South Pare through misty jungle; the terrain is slippery and wet rather than technical, rewarded with views toward the Same landscape and Mkomazi National Park.

Trek 3 hari dari Tona ke Puncak Shengena

Menengah, trek hutan multihari non-teknis
3 hari (trek antar-desa + summit fajar)

A multi-day route described by a local operator: starting from Tona, it threads through villages and the montane Chome forest over two days before a dawn summit push to Shengena Peak (~2,463 m). The summit opens panoramas to Mkomazi National Park, North Pare, the Taita Hills (Kenya) and Mount Meru; the route emphasises Pare cultural experience and can be paired with a Thornton Falls trek.

Trek harian South Pare dari kota Same

Menengah, kombinasi kunjungan desa, air terjun, dan tanjakan hutan
1 hari (day trip)

A day-trip variant from the town of Same that combines Pare village visits, waterfalls and a forest climb up to the high South Pare ridge and the Shengena summit, as described by a local operator. It emphasises cultural and natural experience over a fast summit push.

Climbing Experiences

Shengena is a remote summit inside the Chome Nature Forest Reserve, so experiences here lean toward guided forest treks and birdwatching rather than crowded climbs. No YouTube video specifically about Shengena/South Pare could be verified (search results are confused with other ranges such as the Usambara/Magamba), so the notes below draw on the official Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) page, a peak database, and live-verified operator/guide reports. Together they corroborate the ~2,463 m elevation, the moist montane forest character of the area, a roughly 6-hour dawn ascent from the Same side, and a 3-day trek variant from Tona through the villages and forest of Chome.
