Description

Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal, with Torre rising to 1,993 m. Its granite terrain includes glacial valleys and high plateaus, with trails linking upland areas, villages, and surrounding valleys. The natural park has routes of varied lengths and difficulty; conditions at altitude can change quickly, so hikers should check trail status before setting out.

This natural-park route follows old pastoral paths on the southern slope of the upper Serra da Estrela massif. It starts at Torre and descends through granite outcrops and mountain meadows toward Alvoco da Serra. Climbing Experiences

Five hiking and visit accounts cover Serra da Estrela from several angles: walking from Torre, a multi-day Loriga loop, the Garganta de Loriga route, and a snowy visit. Hikers describe heat and effort on the climb, fast-moving fog, rocky ground, and winter snow and crowds. These accounts record conditions during their visits, not current trail status.
