Description
The Schreckhorn (4,078 m) is a mountain in the Bernese Alps and the highest peak lying entirely within the canton of Bern, Switzerland. It is the northernmost Alpine four-thousander and the northernmost summit rising above 4,000 metres in Europe, which has long made it a coveted objective for mountaineers. The first ascent was made on 16 August 1861 by Leslie Stephen with guides Ulrich Kaufmann, Christian Michel and Peter Michel, via the upper Schreck Couloir to the Schrecksattel and then the south-east ridge — the normal route for the following fifty years. The modern normal route, the south-west ridge (AD+), was first climbed on 26 July 1902 by John Wicks, Edward Bradby and Claude Wilson, who tackled the very steep ridge without local guides. Part of the Aar massif, it is usually climbed from the Schreckhorn Hut (2,520 m) above Grindelwald and remains one of the harder 4,000ers of the Bernese Oberland.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Schreckhorn experiences are dominated by a technical alpine tour from the Schreckhorn Hut via the south-west ridge — steep, exposed rock that demands solid alpine skills. Many climbers link it with a traverse to the Lauteraarhorn (4,042 m), one of the more demanding ridge itineraries in the Bernese Oberland. Videos and accounts stress the long approach, the exposure on the granite ridge, and the atmosphere of the northernmost four-thousander in the Alps. Some German-language accounts detail the difficulty and logistics, while others highlight the wide summit panorama.
