Description
The Schlern — Sciliar in Italian — is a 2,563 m table mountain of the Dolomites and one of the best-known symbols of the South Tyrol landscape. Its profile is instantly recognisable: a broad summit plateau capped at its north-west end by two distinctive rock towers, the Santner Spitze and the Euringer Spitze. The Santner tower was first climbed in July 1880 by Johann Santner and now bears his name. The mountain rises above the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), the largest high-alpine meadow plateau in the Alps, and towers over the villages of Seis and Völs am Schlern at its foot. The normal route is a waymarked hiking trail — often the numbered route 1 — climbing through wooded slopes onto the summit plateau (Schlernboden), where the Schlernhaus (Rifugio Bolzano) mountain inn stands at about 2,450 m. The true high point is the Petz (Monte Pez) summit on the plateau. Many hikers combine it with a long traverse across the Seiser Alm, taking in Dolomite panoramas — including the Rosengarten/Catinaccio and Langkofel — from the top. The Schlern's silhouette is even celebrated in a local song and pressed into Loacker wafer biscuits.

Routes
SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on the Schlern/Sciliar are almost always framed by the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) and the mountain's broad summit plateau. Many German- and Italian-language vlogs show the waymarked hiking trail climbing through wooded slopes onto the plateau (Schlernboden), where the Schlernhaus (Rifugio Bolzano) inn stands. Recurring themes are the views towards the Santner and Euringer rock towers, Dolomite panoramas toward the Rosengarten/Catinaccio and Langkofel, and a stop at the refuge before pushing on to the Petz (Monte Pez) high point. Some creators frame it as a long but non-technical 'classic' family hike, while others highlight how quickly Dolomite weather can change and how the wide plateau makes orientation tricky in fog.
