Description
The Schilthorn (2,970 m), crowned by the iconic Piz Gloria station, is a Bernese Alps peak overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley and the village of Mürren in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. It is the highest summit north of the Sefinenfurgge Pass. Its top is reached by the Schilthornbahn cable car — whose steepest section holds the record as the world's steepest cable car — up to the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant. The mountain's fame surged after it served as a location for the James Bond film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1969); the name 'Piz Gloria' comes from that film. From the summit the panorama spans the Titlis, Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger, across the Bernese Alps and Jura mountains, to the Vosges and Black Forest — with Mont Blanc just visible. Beyond the cable car, hikers reach it on an alpine trail from Mürren via the Rotstockhütte, while attractions such as the Thrill Walk and Skyline View Platform add to the summit's appeal.
