Description
Schiehallion (1,083 m), whose Gaelic name roughly means 'fairy hill of the Caledonians', is an isolated quartzite mountain in Perthshire, Scotland, with an almost perfect cone silhouette when seen from the west. One of the most popular Munros, it is often recommended to newer hillwalkers thanks to the well-maintained east-ridge path from the Braes of Foss car park, though the final third crosses a tiring quartzite boulder field that is easy to lose in mist. The mountain holds a special place in the history of science: in 1774 the astronomer Nevil Maskelyne used its regular, isolated shape to 'weigh the Earth' through a plumb-line deflection experiment (the Schiehallion experiment), and from that work Charles Hutton introduced contour lines. The summit gives sweeping views over Loch Rannoch, Glen Lyon and the wider Highlands. The round trip is typically about 10 km and takes 4–6 hours.

Routes
Jalur Punggungan Timur via Braes of Foss
Mudah–sedang (jalur terawat, bagian atas berbatu)The standard and most popular route, starting from the Braes of Foss car park on the north-east side. The John Muir Trust-maintained path climbs through grass and boggy ground onto the east ridge, then becomes a quartzite boulder field for the final third to the summit—tiring and easy to lose in mist, so navigation matters.
SourcePendakian musim dingin (winter hillwalking)
Climbing Experiences
Trip reports from Schiehallion confirm its reputation as a 'beginner-friendly' Munro thanks to the maintained east-ridge path, yet repeatedly warn that the final third is a tiring quartzite boulder field that is confusing in mist, and stress navigation and winter kit in the colder months. The videos below cover summer and winter ascents, beginner perspectives, and even mountain-biking to the summit.
