Description

The Schesaplana (2,965 m) is the highest peak of the Rätikon range, standing exactly on the border between Vorarlberg in Austria and Graubünden in Switzerland. Its limestone massif rises above the alpine lake Lünersee on the Austrian side, while the shrinking Brandner Glacier clings to its northern flank. The summit was first reached on 24 August 1610 — one of the earliest documented Alpine summit ascents. The most common route is a long walking path from the Lünersee past the Totalphütte, or from the Swiss side via the Mannheimer Hütte, with steep cable-secured sections such as the "Böser Tritt" before the open summit ridge. From the top there are sweeping views over the Rätikon, the Prättigau valley in Switzerland, and the Silvretta range. The Schesaplana is also famous from Johanna Spyri's 1881 novel Heidi, in which the heroine recognises the mountain from a goat meadow.

Routes

Jalur normal via Lünersee – Totalphütte (Böser Tritt)

Sedang — jalur setapak dengan bagian curam berkawat pengaman "Böser Tritt" dan medan batu terpapar menjelang puncak
1–2 hari (naik ±3–4 jam dari Totalphütte)

The most common route from the Austrian side: take the Lünerseebahn cable car to the Lünersee, follow the shore to the Totalphütte (a common overnight stop), then climb past the cable-secured "Böser Tritt" and exposed rock slopes to the 2,965 m summit ridge. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are needed; early season can hold snow on the north side.

Lintas-punggungan (Überschreitung) via Mannheimer Hütte

Sedang — kombinasi jalur setapak dan bagian berkawat, turun ke sisi Swiss
2 hari

A traverse variant combining the ascent from the Lünersee/Totalphütte with a descent (or approach) via the Mannheimer Hütte on the Swiss side. It offers views of both flanks of the Rätikon and links the mountain huts; well suited as a two-day tour with a hut overnight.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing the Schesaplana usually start from the Lünersee in the Brandnertal, ascending past the Totalphütte and the cable-secured "Böser Tritt" to the 2,965 m summit ridge on the Austria–Switzerland border. Videos highlight the blue Lünersee, the exposed Rätikon rock, the mountain huts (Totalphütte, Mannheimer Hütte) and the wide summit panorama. Several are multi-day hut tours that combine the Schesaplana with nearby peaks and lakes.
