Description

Sass Pordoi (2,950 m), also called Sasso Pordoi or Pordoispitze, is a plateau-shaped rocky summit in the Sella massif at the heart of the Dolomites — a UNESCO World Heritage site. Because of its broad, flat summit and 360-degree panorama across the Dolomite ranges, it is nicknamed the "Terrace of the Dolomites" (Terrazza delle Dolomiti). The plateau summit is easily reached by cable car from Passo Pordoi (2,239 m), where there is a panorama station, viewing terrace and restaurant. From here begin several demanding trails and via ferratas in the Sella group. The most popular hiking objective from Sass Pordoi is Piz Boè (3,152 m), the only three-thousander in the Sella massif, reached via the Forcella Pordoi and a chain of mountain huts (Rifugio Forcella Pordoi and Rifugio Boè). The mix of easy high-altitude access, a lunar-like rock landscape and options ranging from a gentle outing to a technical via ferrata makes Sass Pordoi one of the most iconic springboards for adventure in the Dolomites.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences at Sass Pordoi almost always continue as an ascent of Piz Boè (3,152 m), the only three-thousander in the Sella group. From the plateau terrace reached by cable car from Passo Pordoi, hikers follow trail 627 over the Forcella Pordoi and a chain of mountain huts (Rifugio Forcella Pordoi and Rifugio Boè) across lunar-like scree fields. The footage is dominated by Italian hikers showing 360-degree Dolomite panoramas, exposed cable-secured rock sections, and the technical Cesare Piazzetta via ferrata for the experienced. The mix of easy high-altitude access and routes ranging from gentle to demanding makes Sass Pordoi one of the most iconic springboards for adventure in the Dolomites.
