Description
Volcán Santa María (3,772 m)—Gagxanul in Maya K'iche'—is a large active stratovolcano in Guatemala's western highlands, right beside the city of Quetzaltenango (Xela). It is famous for its catastrophic 1902 eruption, one of the largest of the 20th century, which left a great crater on its southwest flank. From that crater later grew the Santiaguito lava dome, still highly active today, periodically venting ash and gas. The signature experience is a pre-dawn hike to catch sunrise from the summit while watching Santiaguito's small eruptions burst directly below—a rare chance to look down onto an erupting volcano. For local Maya communities the summit is also a place of ritual and prayer, and altars and offerings are commonly seen there.
