Description

The Santa Ana Volcano—known locally as Ilamatepec (2,381 m)—is the highest volcano in El Salvador, set within Los Volcanes (Cerro Verde) National Park. Its main draw is a turquoise-green crater lake at the summit that shifts colour with volcanic activity; from the crater rim hikers can also see Lake Coatepeque and neighbouring volcanoes (Izalco, Cerro Verde). The volcano is active—its most recent eruption was in 2005—so access is tightly managed: ascents are only permitted in certified guided groups departing on a fixed schedule from Cerro Verde. The standard trail runs about 3.5 km one way at a moderate grade through forest and open ground, with rim time limited because of volcanic gas. This popular hike is often combined as a day trip with Lake Coatepeque.

Satu-satunya jalur resmi: pendaki berangkat dalam rombongan berpemandu dari Cerro Verde. Sekitar 3,5 km satu arah dengan tanjakan moderat (±465 m) melewati hutan dan padang terbuka menuju bibir kawah; waktu di puncak dibatasi (sekitar 20 menit) karena gas vulkanik, dan area menutup awal sore. Pemandu bersertifikat wajib.
