Description

Rumiñahui (4,721 m) is a heavily eroded, dormant volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes, set inside Parque Nacional Cotopaxi about 40 km south of Quito and standing near Laguna Limpiopungo, overshadowed by its far more famous neighbour Cotopaxi. Its name comes from Kichwa (rumi 'stone', ñawi 'face/eye') and also recalls the Inca resistance leader. The mountain has three summits—Central being the highest, plus Norte and Sur—and is a popular day climb used to acclimatise before Cotopaxi. The normal route begins at the Laguna Limpiopungo car park (~3,850 m), skirting the lake and then climbing through páramo grassland and loose volcanic sand; the final push to the Central summit is a Class 3–4 rock scramble that demands sure footing and good handholds. With no permanent snow, Rumiñahui can be climbed year-round and rewards hikers with views of Cotopaxi and the national park's high plateau.

Routes

Ruta Normal — Laguna Limpiopungo ke Cumbre Central

Hiking + scramble batu Kelas 3–4 di bagian puncak
6–7 jam pulang-pergi (± 4 jam naik, 2 jam turun)

The standard route starts at the Laguna Limpiopungo car park (~3,850 m), skirting the lake before climbing through páramo grassland and loose volcanic sand. The final push to the Central summit is a Class 3–4 rock scramble requiring sure footing and good handholds; there is no permanent snow, so it can be done year-round.

Variante Cumbre Norte (lebih sulit)

Scramble Kelas 3–4 yang lebih terekspos daripada rute Central
7–8 jam pulang-pergi

A variant to Cumbre Norte, considered Rumiñahui's most difficult top, with more exposed and steeper rock scrambling than the Central route—suited to experienced hikers seeking a bigger challenge.

Climbing Experiences

Rumiñahui (4,721 m) is a classic day climb in Parque Nacional Cotopaxi, Ecuador, widely used to acclimatise before Cotopaxi. The normal route starts at the Laguna Limpiopungo car park (~3,850 m), skirting the lake before climbing through páramo grassland and loose volcanic sand; the summit push to Cumbre Central is a Class 3–4 rock scramble. Trip reports highlight the views of Cotopaxi, the three-part terrain (gentle grassland, steep sand slope, then rock), and the need for sure footing and good handholds near the top. With no permanent snow, the peak can be climbed year-round.
