Information

Elevation
1.550 m
Country
Norwegia (NO)
Location / Range
Puncak-puncak Romsdalen — Munisipalitas Rauma, Møre og Romsdal, Norwegia (dekat Åndalsnes)
Mountain type
Puncak batu meruncing (spire) ikonik di lembah Romsdalen — salah satu tonggak sejarah pendakian tebing Norwegia; non-vulkanik (batuan gneiss)
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
62.4911, 7.7858
Difficulty
Berat & teknis. Tidak ada jalur berjalan biasa ke puncak; rute normal (Nordveggen / Halls Renne) menuntut panjat tebing bertali grade UIAA III–IV sepanjang ~300 m dinding, jadi praktis butuh pengalaman panjat atau pemandu
Best Season

Description

Romsdalshornet (1,550 m) is a sharp rock spire rising over the Romsdalen valley near Åndalsnes, often called one of Norway's most iconic peaks for its miniature-Matterhorn profile. It is a landmark in Norwegian alpinism: a summit cairn was reportedly built around 1828 by Christen Smed and Hans Bjermeland, while the first officially documented ascent was made on 1 September 1881 by the Danish climber Carl Hall with Norwegian guides Erik Norahagen and Mathias Soggemoen. There is no ordinary walking route to the top — the most popular line, the Nordveggen (North Wall) linked to Halls Renne, is a roped rock climb of roughly 300 metres at UIAA III–IV. Romsdalshornet is therefore a target for rock climbers and alpinists rather than hikers, with the descent usually made by a series of rappels. Its summit gives a spectacular panorama toward the Trollveggen wall, Romsdalen, and the surrounding Trolltindene peaks.

Routes

Halls Renne — celah yang menyambung Dinding Utara

Teknis: seksi celah/couloir yang biasa disambung dengan Nordveggen; panjat bertali
Sehari penuh (varian/penyambung rute normal)

Halls Renne is a gully (renne) named after the Danish climber Carl Hall and is often used to link into the Nordveggen line on the classic Romsdalshornet ascent. Norwegian guiding companies describe the Nordveggen–Halls Renne combination as the mountain's principal climbing line. Like the normal route it is fully technical, requiring rope and climbing experience, with a rappel descent.

Nordveggen (Dinding Utara) — rute normal panjat tebing

Berat & teknis: panjat tebing bertali ~300 m pada tingkat UIAA III–IV; butuh pengalaman panjat atau pemandu
+300 m Sehari penuh termasuk pendekatan dan turun rappel

The most popular route to the summit of Romsdalshornet and regarded as its 'normal' line — though it is a full rock climb, not a walking trail. From the Romsdalen valley a steep approach leads to the foot of the north wall, then roughly 300 metres of roped climbing at UIAA III–IV reaches the sharp summit. The rock is generally solid gneiss when dry. Because there is no walk-off, climbers descend by a chain of rappels, so rope and protection skills are essential. Many do it with a certified guide.

Climbing Experiences

Romsdalshornet is not a hiker's mountain: almost everyone who reaches its summit does so as a roped rock climb. The most common line is the Nordveggen (North Wall), often linked with the Halls Renne gully — about 300 metres of climbing at UIAA III–IV. Many climbers hire certified guides because the route is fully technical and the descent is a chain of rappels that demands careful rope management. Climbers' footage shows a mix of exposed scrambling and vertical pitches, with an extraordinary panorama toward the Trollveggen wall and the Romsdalen valley. The sharp summit has also been a stage for well-known challenges, including the runner-vs-BASE-jumper contest documented by mountain runner Kilian Jornet. Dry weather and clean rock in summer are key to a safe climb.
