Description

Rocciamelone (3,538 m) is a prominent rock peak in the Graian Alps, standing between the Val di Susa and the Val Cenischia in Piedmont, Italy. It holds a special place in the history of mountaineering: in 1358 Bonifacio Rotario d'Asti climbed it and carried a bronze triptych to the summit to fulfil a vow — one of the earliest documented pilgrimage-motivated ascents in the Alps. Ever since, Rocciamelone has been a pilgrimage mountain, and its summit bears a bronze statue of the Madonna del Rocciamelone (erected in 1899) and a small chapel. Its normal route climbs from Mompantero (Susa) past the Rifugio La Riposa and the Rifugio Ca' d'Asti (2,854 m); it is not a technical climb but a long EE-graded hike with a big elevation gain and an upper section that is exposed and partly protected by fixed ropes. The summit panorama sweeps across the valleys of Piedmont and the surrounding Alps, making it one of the most popular hiking objectives in the Val di Susa.

Routes

A variant for fit, experienced hikers: starting far lower near Susa/Mompantero and climbing entirely on foot to the summit, amassing around 3,000 m of gain in a single day. Its upper part merges with the normal route (via Ca' d'Asti and the exposed summit section), but the extra climb from the valley floor makes it one of the most demanding day-ascents in the Val di Susa. It requires a very early start, careful water and energy management, and stable weather.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Rocciamelone (3,538 m) is a long EE-graded hike from the Val di Susa side, not a technical climb: from Mompantero/La Riposa past the Rifugio Ca' d'Asti (2,854 m) to the Madonna-topped summit. The clips below show real ascents of the normal route from La Riposa — including a Susa version with about 3,000 m of gain — while trip reports and hiking blogs summarise the route, timings, and the exposed, partly rope-protected upper section.
