Description

Risnjak (Veliki Risnjak, 1,528 m) is the highest peak of the Gorski Kotar region and the core of Risnjak National Park in western Croatia, part of the Dinaric Alps. Its name is thought to derive from 'ris' (lynx), a predator that still roams its dense forests alongside bears and wolves. The park protects near-untouched old-growth fir-beech forest, karst meadows and the springs of the Kupa River. The summit hike usually begins at Crni Lug via the Horvatova staza (an educational trail named after Croatian mountaineering pioneer Josip Schlosser Klekovski), passing the Schlosserov dom mountain hut before a short scramble to the rocky top of Veliki Risnjak, with panoramas toward the Kvarner Gulf, the Julian Alps and the Dinaric ridgelines. Sitting between the Adriatic and the interior, Risnjak is famously misty, cool and very wet — sustaining rich biodiversity.

Routes

Crni Lug → Horvatova staza → Schlosserov dom → Veliki Risnjak

Sedang; jalur edukasi bermarka, tanjakan bertahap, bagian akhir berbatu dengan sedikit scrambling
±5–6 jam pulang-pergi

The main and most popular route. From the park entrance at Crni Lug, the Horvatova staza (an educational trail named after mountaineering pioneer Josip Schlosser Klekovski) climbs through old-growth forest to the Schlosserov dom hut near the top, then a final rocky section to the Veliki Risnjak summit (1,528 m). A park ticket is required; weather changes fast and the exposed summit can be cold and misty.

Punggungan Risnjak → Snježnik (traverse)

Sedang–berat; jalur punggungan panjang antar-puncak melewati medan karst dan hutan
1 hari (jalur punggungan panjang)

A ridge traverse for experienced hikers, linking the Risnjak area with the neighbouring peak of Snježnik via old-growth forest and karst meadows. Demanding for its distance, but offering a quieter, wilder taste of the Gorski Kotar backcountry.
