Description

Rincón de la Vieja (1,916 m) is an active andesitic complex volcano in north-western Costa Rica, about 23 km from the city of Liberia in Guanacaste Province. Its summit comprises at least nine aligned eruptive vents and occasionally produces small phreatic eruptions. The volcano is the centrepiece of Rincón de la Vieja National Park — part of the UNESCO World Heritage Area de Conservación Guanacaste — and is famous for its geothermal features: bubbling mud pots (pailas), sulphurous fumaroles, hot springs, and the beautiful La Cangreja and La Leona waterfalls. The park is split into the Las Pailas sector (the most popular, with a loop trail past mud pots and fumaroles) and the Santa María sector. The trail to the acid-lake summit crater is long and frequently closed for safety, while the lower trails offer wildlife-rich tropical dry forest — monkeys, coatis and abundant birdlife.

Routes

Jalur Air Terjun La Cangreja

Sedang
≈4–5 jam pulang-pergi (≈10 km)

A route to the La Cangreja waterfall, famous for its blue-tinted plunge pool, crossing forest and open grassland in the Las Pailas sector. Long and rewarding, but still on the lower slopes — not toward the summit crater.

Jalur Lingkar Las Pailas (Sendero Las Pailas)

Sedang
≈2–3 jam

A popular loop trail in the Las Pailas sector that winds past Rincón de la Vieja's signature geothermal features: bubbling mud pots (pailas), sulphurous fumaroles, and small hot springs, amid wildlife-rich tropical dry forest. Suitable for day hikers and families; the national park entrance is managed by SINAC.

Jalur Puncak / Kawah (kerap ditutup)

Menantang
≈7–8 jam pulang-pergi bila dibuka

The long route to the active acid-lake summit crater (1,916 m). This trail is OFTEN CLOSED for safety due to volcanic activity and strong high-altitude winds — always check the national park's official status before planning a summit attempt.

Climbing Experiences

The Rincón de la Vieja experience centres more on the trails across the park's lower slopes than on the summit crater, which is frequently closed. The Las Pailas sector offers a loop past bubbling mud pots (pailas), sulphurous fumaroles, and wildlife-rich tropical dry forest, while the trails to the La Cangreja and La Leona waterfalls are day-hiker favourites. Experience videos showcase the volcano's signature geothermal features, its wildlife (monkeys, coatis, birds), and how to walk the Las Pailas sector — giving a realistic picture that the main draw here is the volcanic-forest landscape rather than simply reaching the highest point.
