Description
The Rigi is a mountain massif in Central Switzerland, almost entirely encircled by three lakes — Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee), Lake Zug, and Lake Lauerz. Part of the Schwyz Alps, it straddles the cantons of Schwyz and Lucerne, with its high point, Rigi Kulm, reaching 1,797 m within Schwyz. Nicknamed the "Queen of the Mountains" (Königin der Berge), it is celebrated for its panoramas over the lakes and Alps and its sunrise views, which drew 19th-century travellers including Mark Twain. In 1871 it gained Europe's first mountain cog railway (Vitznau–Rigi) and remains easily reached today by cogwheel railway and cable car; hiking is generally moderate and family-friendly, with the classic ascents rising from Weggis, Küssnacht, and Goldau.
