Description

Rhino Peak (Sesotho: Thaba Ngcobo), an escarpment summit of about 3,051 m in the southern Drakensberg, is one of the most iconic day hikes in the Garden Castle area of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park (a World Heritage Site) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Its promontory resembles a rhino's horn jutting from the basalt Drakensberg wall, marking the plateau edge where South Africa meets Lesotho. The route runs about 20 km round-trip with over 1,200 m of ascent via Mashai Pass, crossing river valleys, Pillar Cave (a popular overnight spot), and a steep rocky pass before reaching a summit with sweeping views over the Mzimkhulu ranges and Lesotho. The climb is non-technical but strenuous and demands fitness and weather awareness. (Note: Wikidata lists an elevation of 2,893 m, while Drakensberg hiking authorities generally cite ~3,051 m.)

Routes

Garden Castle → Rhino Peak via Mashai Pass (sehari)

Berat (non-teknis; jalur panjang + pas curam)
±9 jam pulang-pergi

The classic route from the Garden Castle office (Cobham area): about 20 km round-trip with roughly 1,236 m of ascent to the ~3,051 m summit, around 5 hours to the top. It climbs gently along a river, passes Pillar Cave about 4 km in, then steepens up a rocky pass to the escarpment edge and the Rhino Peak promontory. It needs an early start and weather awareness.

S Route (pendakian teknis 6 pitch)

Teknis — panjat batu multi-pitch (grade E3/F1 dsb.), hanya untuk pemanjat berpengalaman
Multi-pitch (sehari untuk pemanjat)

Completely different from the Mashai Pass hiking route, the 'S Route' is a six-pitch rock climb up Rhino Peak's cliffs: it takes in the exposed Knife Ridge pitch, a loose-rock crux pitch, and sandy variable rock, with wind and rope-drag challenges. It is not for ordinary hikers—it requires trad-climbing experience, rope gear, and careful loose-rock risk assessment.

Varian dua hari (bermalam di Pillar Cave)

Sedang–berat (dipecah jadi dua hari)
2 hari (menginap di gua)

A more relaxed alternative that splits the hike with an overnight at Pillar Cave (about 4 km in), so the big climb to the escarpment and summit is done the next morning. It suits those wanting sunrise on the escarpment edge and a lighter single-day distance.

Climbing Experiences

Rhino Peak (Thaba Ngcobo) is tackled as a long, strenuous day hike from the Garden Castle office in the southern Drakensberg. The roughly 20 km round-trip climbs over 1,200 m, following a river, passing Pillar Cave, then working up a steep rocky pass (Mashai/Rhino Pass) to the escarpment edge. Hikers describe pre-dawn starts, a relentless climb, fast-changing weather, and the reward of sweeping views over the Mzimkhulu ranges and the Lesotho plateau from the rhino-horn promontory. Some make it a two-day trek with a cave overnight, and there is also a 'Rhino Peak Challenge' mountain race.
