Description

Ras Dashen (also spelled Ras Dejen) is the highest mountain in Ethiopia at about 4,533 m and one of the highest peaks in Africa. It rises in the Simien Mountains, the eroded remains of an ancient volcanic basalt plateau cut into dramatic cliffs, pinnacles and deep gorges — a landscape that shelters endemic wildlife such as the gelada, walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf within the World Heritage-listed Simien Mountains National Park. Climbing Ras Dashen is usually the climax of a multi-day Simien traverse: the route passes highland villages and camps such as Sankaber, Geech and Chenek before dropping to the Ambiko base camp and a pre-dawn ascent to the summit. The climb is non-technical but demanding because of the altitude and distances; visitors must be accompanied by a guide and a park scout.

Routes

Grand Circuit Simien (8–12 hari, eksplorasi escarpment penuh)

Berat non-teknis (trek ketinggian panjang; aklimatisasi bertahap; kawanan gelada)
8–12 hari (tergantung pace dan variasi rute yang diambil)

The most thorough exploration of the Simien Mountains, combining all zones of the national park. Departing from Debark via Sankaber, the route follows the escarpment edge past Imet Gogo (3,926 m) and Inatye (4,058 m), overnights at Geech, continues to Chenek, crosses Bwahit Ridge (4,430 m), drops to Ambiko, pushes to Ras Dashen (4,533 m), and returns via a different line to see more of the range. Provides ideal gradual acclimatisation, encounters with gelada herds (Ethiopia's endemic baboon), lammergeyers, and exposure to diverse vegetation zones from lower savanna to Afro-alpine. A guide, armed scout, and pack mules are mandatory.

Route Segments

Kembali ke Debark (rute turun bervariasi)

    ⏱ 2–3 hari

3–4 hari (Chenek → Bwahit → Ambiko → summit → kembali)

A faster option for hikers who have already spent at least 2–3 days at altitude in the Simien Mountains. Leaving directly from Chenek Camp (~3,620 m) across open alpine grassland toward Bwahit Saddle (~4,430 m)—the Simien's second-highest peak—before dropping to Ambiko and a pre-dawn summit push to Ras Dashen (4,533 m). Skips the lower stages (Sankaber–Geech) and therefore depends strongly on prior acclimatisation. An armed scout and guide from Simien Mountains National Park are still mandatory.

Route Segments

  1. 1

    Chenek Camp → Sadel Bwahit

    ⏱ 3–4 jam 4.430 mdpl

Padang rumput alpine terbuka; Bwahit Peak dapat disinggahi untuk aklimatisasi tambahan

  2. 2

Sadel Bwahit → Ambiko Base Camp

    ⏱ 3–4 jam 3.200 mdpl

Turun tajam ke lembah Ambiko melalui desa Chiro Leba

  3. 3

Ambiko → Puncak Ras Dashen → Ambiko

    ⏱ 7–9 jam (pp) 4.533 mdpl

Summit push dini hari; scrambling ringan di blok granit puncak

Trek Simien Klasik ke Ras Dashen (via Sankaber–Geech–Chenek–Ambiko)

Berat non-teknis (trek ketinggian panjang; sedikit scrambling di blok puncak)
~5 hari (varian 7–12 hari menambah loop escarpment & Bwahit)

The main route to the roof of Ethiopia. From Sankaber the path follows the escarpment edge past Jinbar Waterfall to Geech camp, continues over Imet Gogo and Inatye (~4,058 m) to Chenek, then drops via Chiro Leba village to the Ambiko base camp before a pre-dawn ascent to the 4,533 m summit. A guide and park scout are mandatory; pack mules are common.

Route Segments

    Sankaber → Geech (Gich) Camp

    ⏱ 6–7 jam 3.600 mdpl

Menyusuri escarpment lewat Air Terjun Jinbar

  2. 2

    Geech → Chenek Camp

    ⏱ 6–7 jam 3.620 mdpl

Melewati Imet Gogo & punggungan Inatye (~4.058 m); kawanan gelada

  3. 3

    Chenek → Ambiko Base Camp

    ⏱ 6–7 jam 3.200 mdpl

Lewati Bwahit Pass lalu turun ke desa Chiro Leba & Ambiko

  4. 4

Ambiko → Ras Dashen → Ambiko

Climbing Experiences

Reaching the summit of Ras Dashen is usually the end of a multi-day Simien Mountains traverse. The classic route runs from Sankaber past Geech and Chenek, over ridges near Imet Gogo and Inatye, then down to Chiro Leba village toward the Ambiko base camp before a pre-dawn ascent to the 4,533 m summit. Hikers describe troops of gelada, towering escarpment cliffs, cold nights, and a summit block requiring light scrambling. The sources below include real summit footage, area videos, and first-person trek guides.
