Description
Quandary Peak (4,350 m / 14,271 ft) is the highest summit of the Tenmile Range in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, about 10 km south of Breckenridge within the White River National Forest. Although a "fourteener," its standard East Ridge route is a Class 1 trail hike of roughly 10.9 km round trip with about 1,050 m of gain, which makes Quandary the most-climbed fourteener in Colorado and a popular first-14er objective. The real difficulty is the altitude, the exposed upper ridge, and fast-changing weather—hikers are advised to start pre-dawn and be off the summit before afternoon thunderstorms. Mountain goats are frequently seen on the upper slopes.

Routes
West Ridge
Kelas 3 (scrambling)A much harder alternative from the west via the Blue Lakes/McCullough Gulch side. It involves Class 3 rock scrambling along the west ridge before joining the summit; often combined with a descent of the East Ridge. For experienced hikers with solid navigation and terrain judgement only.
Climbing Experiences
Quandary Peak is most often climbed via the Class 1 East Ridge trail from the trailhead near Hoosier Pass. Climbers stress a pre-dawn start to beat afternoon thunderstorms, the breath-sapping 4,350 m altitude, and the exposed upper ridge. Winter trip videos show that snow, wind, and navigation make it a far more serious outing than the summer hike.
