Description
Puy de Sancy (1,885 m; some sources give 1,886 m) is the highest point of the Massif Central and the highest volcano in metropolitan France. The summit is the eroded remnant of a large Monts Dore stratovolcano that built up between roughly 5 million and 250,000 years ago; now extinct, it has weathered into a dramatic array of rock needles, dykes and glacial valleys in the heart of Auvergne (Puy-de-Dôme department). The top is remarkably accessible: from the Le Mont-Dore resort a cable car climbs more than 450 m in about 4 minutes, followed by a ~20-minute walk up a wooden staircase (864 steps) to the summit. Walking the whole way from the Le Mont-Dore car park covers about 500 m of ascent over roughly 7 km on two waymarked trails, while experienced hikers take the longer, more scenic ridge traverse through the Vallée de Chaudefour nature reserve. From the summit a 360° panorama opens that, according to local tourism, takes in about one-seventh of France. Thanks to its accessibility and striking volcanic scenery, Sancy is one of central France's most popular hiking destinations.

Routes
Via Le Mont-Dore (jalur bertanda / téléphérique + tangga kayu)
Sedang; jalur kaki menanjak konstan, opsi termudah naik téléphérique lalu 864 anak tangga kayu ~20 menit ke puncakThe most popular and easiest route to Puy de Sancy starts from the Le Mont-Dore resort (±1,350 m). There are two ways: (1) take the Sancy cable car, which climbs more than 450 m in about 4 minutes to the upper station, then walk ~20 minutes up a wooden staircase of 864 steps to the 1,885 m summit; or (2) walk the whole way from the Le Mont-Dore car park on two waymarked trails, about 500 m of ascent over roughly 7 km round trip. The walking trail climbs steadily but is clear; the final section joins the wooden staircase to protect fragile vegetation. The summit offers a 360° panorama over Auvergne's volcanic landscape. Watch for fast-changing weather and strong wind on the ridge, and crowds on the staircase in holiday season.

Climbing Experiences
Climbing Puy de Sancy can be as easy or as challenging as you like. The simplest option uses the cable car from Le Mont-Dore and then an ~20-minute walk up a wooden staircase of 864 steps to the 1,885 m summit — suitable for families and casual visitors. Those who want to walk the whole way climb about 500 m of ascent over roughly 7 km from the Le Mont-Dore car park on two waymarked trails. Experienced hikers prefer the longer, more scenic ridge traverse through the Vallée de Chaudefour nature reserve, passing Puy Ferrand, the Dent de la Rancune and volcanic rock crests with views over glacial valleys. Weather on the ridge changes fast and is often windy, sturdy shoes are recommended, and the summit can be very crowded in holiday season. The reward is a 360° panorama over Auvergne's distinctive volcanic landscape.
