Description
Puy de Dôme (1,465 m) is a trachyte lava dome that forms the highest point and emblem of the Chaîne des Puys — a chain of roughly 80 young volcanoes in France's Massif Central, near Clermont-Ferrand. Although its rounded dome looks gentle, it was built by an explosive Peléan-type eruption about 10,700 years ago and is now dormant. Since 2018 the surrounding 'Chaîne des Puys – Limagne fault' area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its geological value. The summit is reachable on foot via the Chemin des Muletiers, a historic mule track once used by pilgrims heading to the Roman Temple of Mercury, climbing about 330 m from the Col de Ceyssat through 15 zig-zag bends in 45–60 minutes. A non-walking option is the Panoramique des Dômes rack railway, which reaches the top in about 15 minutes. From the summit stretches a panorama of dozens of puys, the Limagne plain, Clermont-Ferrand and the Massif du Sancy. The peak is also famous as the setting of the legendary Anquetil–Poulidor 'duel' in the 1964 Tour de France, and today it is a popular paragliding launch site.

Routes
Chemin des Muletiers — dari Col de Ceyssat
Moderat; jalur setapak lebar bekas jalan mule, 15 tikungan zig-zag, beberapa segmen curamThe most popular walking route to the summit of Puy de Dôme. From the Col de Ceyssat car park (~1,078 m), the Chemin des Muletiers — a historic path once used by pilgrims heading to the Temple of Mercury — climbs about 330 m over roughly 2 km one way through 15 numbered zig-zag bends. Bends 3 and 13 are among the steepest. It usually takes 45–60 minutes to the top. At the summit are the Roman temple ruins, the rack-railway station and a panorama of the Chaîne des Puys, the Limagne plain, Clermont-Ferrand and the Massif du Sancy. The open summit is often windy, so bring a windproof layer.

Panoramique des Dômes (kereta rack) — akses tanpa mendaki
Mudah; kereta bergerigi, cocok untuk semua kalanganA non-hiking alternative: the Panoramique des Dômes rack (cog) railway carries passengers from the lower station near Clermont-Ferrand to the summit in about 15 minutes, offering a 360° panorama of the Chaîne des Puys, the Limagne plain and the Massif du Sancy along the way. It suits families or anyone wanting the summit without the climb; from the top station there are flat paths around the platform, the Temple of Mercury site and the paragliding viewpoints.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing Puy de Dôme is most often done via the Chemin des Muletiers from the Col de Ceyssat: a historic trail about 2 km one way that climbs roughly 330 m through 15 zig-zag bends in 45–60 minutes. A non-walking option is the Panoramique des Dômes rack railway, which reaches the summit in about 15 minutes. From the top there is a panorama of the dozens of puys of the Chaîne des Puys, the Limagne plain and the Massif du Sancy, plus the ruins of the Roman Temple of Mercury. The sources below — an encyclopedia article, official sites and several hiking vlogs in various languages — give a real sense of trail conditions, the windy summit weather and the atmosphere across the seasons.
