- Hazards
Description
Punurrunha — widely known as Mount Bruce — is Western Australia's second-highest peak at 1,234 m, only about 15 m below Mount Meharry some 62 km to the south-east. It sits in the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara, inside Karijini National Park; the name Punurrunha comes from the Panyjima language, and hiker accounts describe the area as Banjima country. Unlike the slot gorges Karijini is famous for, Mount Bruce offers open ridge walking above red spinifex plains. The park agency (DBCA) lists three walks from one car park: the 500 m Marandoo View (Class 2, about 30 minutes return), the roughly 4.6 km Honey Hakea Trail, and the Class 5 Summit Trail of about 9 km return. Trail guides give slightly different figures for the summit line — 9 to 11 km with roughly 576–705 m of gain — and 3 to 6 hours on foot. The upper section demands light climbing: a narrow ledge protected by a chain bolted to the rock, then a rocky ridge linking the formation known as Chinaman's Hat to the summit. The top opens onto the Hamersley Range in every direction, along with a view down onto the Marandoo iron ore mine — a contrast hikers frequently remark on. The climate is tropical semi-desert: cool dry winters and searing summers, which is why almost everyone starts before sunrise.
Routes
Honey Hakea Trail (alternatif menengah)
Sedang — sebagian scrambling ringan, jauh lebih pendek daripada jalur puncakA middle option for walkers who want a taste of Mount Bruce's terrain without committing to the summit. It runs about 4.6 km, sharing the lower part of the summit line before branching off, and gives far wider views than the short Marandoo View walk with some light scrambling along the way. A sensible choice when temperatures are too high for the full climb or time in the park is short.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Almost every Mount Bruce account begins in the dark. Hikers leave the car park before 5am with headlamps, cross gentle spinifex slopes, then gain the open ridge just as the sky reddens. The pattern repeats across vlogs and blogs: the lower trail feels friendly, then it turns to broken rock, a narrow ledge protected by a bolted chain, and a rock chute that has to be climbed almost vertically — frightening more for its exposure than its technical difficulty. The section most people name as their favourite is the rocky ridge from the Chinaman's Hat formation to the summit. Reported times run 4–5 hours for the 9 km return, roughly 2.5 hours up and 2 hours down. The same accounts are candid about the hard parts: shadeless Pilbara heat, loose sharp rock on the descent, around 3 litres of water per person, and the Marandoo iron ore mine plainly visible from the trail.
