Description

Puncak Yamin (locally called Osua Anin by the Bime community; Dutch colonial name 1913: Prins Hendrik-top) is one of the highest mountains in Papua, rising to approximately 4,540 m. Located in the Jayawijaya Mountains, Highland Papua Province, it is the fourth highest freestanding peak in the Papua region. Dutch colonial surveyors named the summit in 1913 and reported 'eternal snow', which has since disappeared due to climate change. The first confirmed ascent took place on 1 October 2018 — over a century after the peak was first documented — achieved by an 11-member WANADRI expedition team together with 13 local community members from Desa Bime, following an 11-day journey through remote highland forest. An earlier international expedition in January 2018 had failed due to tribal obstacles, adverse weather, and terrain more demanding than anticipated. The extreme remoteness and limited documentation make Puncak Yamin one of Indonesia's most exclusive and rarely climbed high peaks.

Routes

Desa Bime → Puncak Yamin (jalur rintisan Wanadri 2018)

The only documented route to Puncak Yamin was pioneered by the Wanadri Puncak Yamin Expedition in 2018 from Desa Bime in the Star Mountains, Highland Papua. The route pushes through extremely remote highland forest for about 11 days before reaching the summit on 1 October 2018. As this is not a tourist trail there are no posts, markers or infrastructure; success depends entirely on expedition logistics and support from the Bime community, the main access gateway. A travel permit (Surat Keterangan Jalan) and coordination with local communities are mandatory.

Climbing Experiences

Puncak Yamin (Osua Anin to the Bime community; 1913 Dutch colonial name 'Prins Hendrik-top') is among Indonesia's least-climbed mountains. Almost all climbing documentation stems from a single event: the 2018 Wanadri Puncak Yamin Expedition, which pioneered a new route from Desa Bime in the Star Mountains. An early-2018 international attempt failed to reach the top before the Wanadri team, together with local Bime residents, summited on 1 October 2018 after an ~11-day journey through remote highland forest. Because of the peak's remoteness and lack of trails, nearly all sources are expedition reports and Indonesian news coverage rather than independent climber vlogs.
