Description
Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid) in the Sudirman Range, Papua, is the highest point in Indonesia and Oceania at about 4,884 metres. Made of limestone rather than being volcanic, it is one of the Seven Summits and the only one requiring technical rock climbing. Access is very difficult, remote, and requires special permits and experienced expedition operators.

Routes
Carstensz Route
EkstremPemanjatan tebing teknis ke Carstensz Pyramid; butuh izin khusus & operator ekspedisi.
Carstensz Route via helikopter (Timika → Carstensz Meadow)
Teknis (rock climbing 5.7, fixed rope wajib)The most common and fastest route: charter helicopter from Timika to Carstensz Meadow (about 4,200 m), bypassing days of jungle trekking. From the meadow, climbers walk across rocky terrain to the foot of the south face pyramid. The summit climb itself involves fixed ropes on several vertical pitches, a chimney, and a roughly 1 km exposed traverse along the summit ridge before reaching the top (4,884 m). Returning to the meadow on the same day is possible in good conditions. The complete expedition including travel to/from Timika typically runs 5–8 days.
SourceJalur Normal / Rute Harrer (via Helikopter)
SourceTrek Rimba Papua (Pendekatan Darat)
SourceClimbing Experiences
Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid) is the most technically demanding of the Seven Summits: not merely a hike but a limestone rock climb to 4,884 m in remote Papua. Two main approaches exist — a helicopter drop to base camp (3,800 m), which is most common, and a long jungle trek of roughly 80–100 km through extreme tropical forest. The Harrer/Normal route involves fixed lines, the iconic cable bridge on the summit ridge, and technical climbing up to 5.8. Weather shifts quickly, permits are extremely restrictive, and almost all climbers come with professional operators. Access is via Timika in Papua, Indonesia, requiring special permits from several authorities including entry clearance related to the Freeport area.
