Description

Puigmal (Puigmal d'Err), 2,910 m, is one of the highest peaks of the eastern Pyrenees and sits right on the border between Catalonia (Spain) and Pyrénées-Orientales (France). Unlike the jagged granite summits of the central Pyrenees, Puigmal is a broad, rounded grassy mountain with alpine meadows, so its paths are non-technical yet still demanding. The most popular route from the Catalan side starts on the Fontalba plateau (reached via a paid, quota-limited track from Queralbs) and climbs steadily up the flank to the summit ridge—about 5 km with over 900 m of ascent, typically 5–6.5 hours round trip. Many hikers combine it with a descent into the Vall de Núria to make a loop. The open summit gives a wide panorama across the eastern Pyrenees and the Cerdanya plain. Because clouds tend to build from midday, an early start is strongly advised.

Routes

Dari Fontalba (jalur bertanda, sisi Catalan)

Mudah–sedang (non-teknis, jalur jelas)
±5–6,5 jam pulang-pergi (~5 km naik, tanjakan >900 m)

The most popular route, starting from the Fontalba plateau reached via a paid, quota-limited track from Queralbs. A waymarked path climbs steadily up the flank to the summit ridge—non-technical but tiring, with over 900 m of ascent in a short distance. An early start is advised as clouds often build on the summit from midday.

Lingkar Fontalba–Puigmal–Vall de Núria

Sedang (jarak lebih panjang, tetap non-teknis)
±6–7 jam (lingkar)

A loop variant combining the ascent from Fontalba with a descent into the glacial Vall de Núria via the Coma de l'Embut, then a return to Fontalba along a scenic path. It adds distance and views, remains non-technical, and is a popular way to experience both sides of the Puigmal massif.

Climbing Experiences

Puigmal trip reports—in French, Spanish and Catalan—describe a broad grassy mountain with clear, non-technical paths that are nonetheless tiring due to sustained ascent. The videos below capture climbs from Fontalba and from the Vall de Núria, in summer and snowy conditions, and the wide panorama of the eastern Pyrenees from the summit.
