Description

Puig Major (1,436 m) is the highest point of the island of Mallorca, rising at the core of the Serra de Tramuntana range, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Its true summit is off-limits to the public: since the 1950s it has held a military radar installation (a US Air Force base from 1950 to 1993, now Spanish military) whose distinctive white radome is visible for miles. Hikers therefore head for its twin summit, Penyal des Migdia (~1,398 m), reached by a steep karst route through old tunnels and along cliff edges with panoramas over the Bay of Sóller, Sa Calobra and the Tramuntana ridgeline. For cyclists, the climb to the Monnàber tunnel at the foot of Puig Major is among Mallorca's most famous paved ascents. The mountain also holds occasional winter snow and historic snow houses (cases de neu) on its slopes.

Routes

Penyal des Migdia (puncak sekunder yang boleh didaki)

Sedang–berat; jalur karst curam berbatu, beberapa terowongan tua dan tepian eksposur, sebagian butuh scrambling
±5–7 jam pulang-pergi

Because the main summit of Puig Major is held by the military, hikers aim for Penyal des Migdia (~1,398 m), its twin peak on the eastern side. The route cuts through the Tramuntana limestone landscape, passing old tunnels and cliff edges with panoramas toward the Bay of Sóller and Sa Calobra. It demands fitness and care for its rocky terrain, exposure and fast-arriving mist.

Tanjakan sepeda Sóller/Lluc → terowongan Monnàber (kaki Puig Major)

Berat bagi pesepeda; tanjakan aspal panjang dan konsisten hingga mulut terowongan
Beberapa jam bersepeda tergantung titik mulai

One of Mallorca's most famous paved climbs. From the Sóller or Lluc side, the road ascends in steady switchbacks to the Monnàber tunnel at the foot of Puig Major — the high point of the road here — before a dramatic descent toward Sa Calobra. A favourite among road cyclists; take care with traffic and the dark tunnel.

Climbing Experiences

Because the true summit of Puig Major (1,436 m) is closed off by a military installation, hikers' experiences centre on its neighbouring peak, Penyal des Migdia, and the surrounding Serra de Tramuntana landscape. The videos below document the steep karst ascent to Penyal des Migdia, trail running at the foot of Puig Major under fast-changing Tramuntana weather, and the iconic cycling climb to the Monnàber tunnel.
