Description

Pu Ta Leng (~3,049 m), locally spelled Pú Tả Lèng, is the third-highest explored peak in Vietnam after Fansipan and Pu Si Lung. Rising in the Hoàng Liên Sơn range on the border of Lai Châu and Lào Cai provinces, it is celebrated among Vietnamese trekkers for its mossy old-growth forest, clear streams and vast spreads of rhododendron ('đỗ quyên', dozens of species) that bloom in March–April. The trek usually takes 2–3 days from villages around Tả Lèng or Hồ Thầu, pushing through humid primeval forest and steep climbs before reaching the frequently cloud-wrapped summit ridge. Though lower than Fansipan, its long and demanding route makes it one of the most beautiful yet toughest treks in northwest Vietnam.

Routes

Loop klasik: Hồ Thầu → puncak → Tả Lèng (3 hari 2 malam)

Berat (level kesulitan 3) — panjang, terjal, menuntut fisik; wajib pemandu/porter lokal
3 hari 2 malam (±34 km)

The most popular route starts from Hồ Thầu village, climbing through primeval forest and stream crossings to a forest camp around 2,200–2,400 m, then pushing to the 3,049 m summit before descending via the Tả Lèng side. It totals roughly 34 km over 3 days and 2 nights, with steep sections where trekkers pull up on roots and branches, mossy old-growth forest and a frequently mist-wrapped summit ridge.

Variasi pendek: Hồ Thầu → Sì Thâu Chải (2 hari 1 malam)

Berat–menengah — lebih singkat namun tetap terjal
2 hari 1 malam

A shorter variant ascends from Hồ Thầu and descends to Sì Thâu Chải over 2 days and 1 night. Alongside the Tả Lèng and Hồ Thầu trailheads there is also an approach from Giang Ma; these four gateways are the main accesses to the Pu Ta Leng ridge.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Pu Ta Leng is widely documented by Vietnamese trekkers and media as a 2–3 day trek through mossy old-growth forest to the 3,049 m summit ridge — often timed to the rhododendron ('đỗ quyên') bloom in March–April. The Vietnamese-language videos below show the trail, forest camps, stream crossings, the flower fields and the summit moment; all were verified live against public YouTube data.
