Description

Psiloritis (2,456 m), also known as Mount Ida, is the highest mountain on the island of Crete, Greece, and the peak with the greatest topographic prominence in all of Greece. Its massif is built of karst limestone — it is not a volcano — and forms the core of the UNESCO Psiloritis Global Geopark. The summit is called Timios Stavros ('Holy Cross') and is marked by a small white chapel. The mountain is steeped in mythology: the Ideon Andron cave on its slopes is said in ancient Greek legend to be where Zeus was raised. The most common ascent follows the E4 trail from the Nida Plateau past the Ideon Andron cave to the summit; the terrain is a long, open karst climb, non-technical but demanding on stamina, requiring plenty of water and care in fog. From the top on a clear day, the view stretches across Crete's ranges to the Libyan and Cretan Seas.

The most popular and easiest route. It starts from the Nida Plateau (~1,400–1,500 m) near the Ideon Andron cave and follows the E4 European long-distance waymarks that cross the whole of Crete. The trail climbs over open karst ridges to the summit chapel of Timios Stavros (2,456 m). There is no water source along the way; carry enough water, start early, and watch for fog and afternoon storms.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Psiloritis (2,456 m) is usually a day hike from the Nida Plateau (~1,400–1,500 m), following the E4 waymarks past the Ideon Andron cave to the Timios Stavros summit. The ascent takes about 3–4 hours and the full round trip 6–8 hours across open karst terrain with no water source along the way. Hikers stress carrying enough water, sun protection, and an early start, since fog and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Some parties overnight at the Prinos/Mygero shelter to break up the walk. The videos below document real ascents to the summit chapel.
