Description

Presanella (Cima Presanella, 3,558 m) is the highest mountain of the Adamello-Presanella range in the northern Italian Alps, standing within the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park in the province of Trentino. Its glacier-mantled summit is one of the most sought-after three-thousanders of western Trentino. The first well-recorded ascent was in 1864 by a party guided by François Devouassoud together with English climbers — among them Douglas William Freshfield — who approached from Vermiglio over the Passo di Cercen and the saddle now known as the "Sella di Freshfield"; only three weeks later the Austrian explorer Julius Payer and his guide Girolamo Botteri also reached the top. Today the normal route usually starts from the Rifugio Segantini in the Val d'Amola or from the Rifugio Denza, crossing a glacier (Vedretta d'Amola / di Nardis) before the final rocky summit ridge, which gives sweeping views over the Adamello massif and the Brenta Dolomites.

Routes

Via Normale dal Rifugio Segantini (Val d'Amola)

Berat (F+/PD): pendakian gletser dengan crampon & tali, kemuncak bebatuan bereksposur di bagian akhir
2 hari (hari 1: naik ke Rifugio Segantini; hari 2: puncak & turun ~8–10 jam)

The normal and most popular route to Presanella, based in the Val d'Amola with a night at the Rifugio Segantini (2,373 m). Day two ascends onto the Vedretta d'Amola glacier, crosses it roped and on crampons (mind the crevasses), then climbs the final exposed rocky summit ridge to the 3,558 m top. Summit views reach the Adamello massif to the south and the Brenta Dolomites to the east. An early start matters so snow bridges stay firm and to avoid afternoon storms.

Via Rifugio Denza (Vermiglio)

Berat (PD): pendekatan gletser lebih panjang dari sisi utara, medan campuran salju & batu
2 hari (bermalam di Rifugio Denza; puncak hari kedua)

A classic alternative from the north side based in the Vermiglio valley with a night at the Rifugio Denza (2,298 m). It approaches Presanella over glacier and a high saddle before joining the summit ridge — close to the historic 1864 line of the Freshfield party that gave its name to the "Sella di Freshfield". It demands glacier technique and high-mountain experience.

Climbing Experiences

Most documented Presanella experiences revolve around the normal route ("via normale") from the Val d'Amola: a night at the Rifugio Segantini, a roped crampon crossing of the Vedretta d'Amola glacier, then the final rocky summit ridge to the 3,558 m top. Italian-language vlogs highlight the importance of an early start because of glacier conditions, the use of glacier gear, and the wide summit panorama over the Adamello massif and the Brenta Dolomites. There are also harder variants such as the "Scivolo Nord" (north snow couloir) and the option of a night at a high bivouac (Bivacco Brigata Orobica) to break up the climb.
